Meet the People Behind the Stories

Every book begins the same way.

Not with a printed page or a finished illustration, but with an idea.

Long before a book reaches a library shelf or a child's hands, someone sits down with a blank page and decides to create something that didn't exist before. An author begins writing. An illustrator begins sketching. One idea slowly becomes a story that can inspire generations.

As part of our Summer of Possibility campaign, this week we're celebrating the authors and illustrators who help children discover the joy of reading while encouraging young readers to imagine their own creative possibilities.

Why It Matters

When children learn about the people behind the books they love, they begin to understand that stories are created by real people—not by magic.

Every published author was once a child learning to write.

Every illustrator was once a child filling notebooks with drawings.

Every creative journey starts somewhere.

That realization can be incredibly empowering. It helps children see that creativity isn't reserved for a select few. It's something they can practice, develop, and share.

Ways to Celebrate This Week

Try one of these activities with a child:

• Read a favorite book and learn about the author.
• Explore the illustrator's artwork and creative process.
• Ask a child what story they would write if they had their own book.
• Invite them to draw a new character or create a different ending.
• Make a simple homemade book together using paper, crayons, or markers.

The goal isn't to create something perfect.

The goal is to encourage imagination.

A Simple Conversation

After you finish reading together, ask:

"If you could write any story in the world, what would it be about?"

There isn't a right answer.

Sometimes that one question is enough to help a child realize their ideas are worth sharing.
