How PromiseConnects Delivered 2,225.8 Hours of Virtual Tutoring and Academic Support

What does 2,225.8 hours look like?

It looks like a student logging on with a question.

A tutor helping with an assignment that isn’t quite making sense.

A book being read together.

A mentor returning week after week.

And sometimes, it looks like the small moment when “I don’t understand” becomes “I got it.”

Through PromiseConnects, Mentor A Promise’s virtual mentorship and academic support program, we have delivered 2,225.8 hours of tutoring and academic support to children and youth experiencing housing instability.

We’re proud of the number.

But the story behind it matters even more.

Removing a Barrier to Virtual Learning

Virtual programming can make educational support available beyond the walls of a traditional classroom or program site.

But first, a student needs the technology to participate.

Through PromiseConnects, Mentor A Promise provides free tablets to help children and youth get connected to our virtual programming.

For us, however, providing technology is only the first step.

A tablet can create access to a session.

A mentor or tutor creates the human connection within it.

Why Consistency Matters

Children and families experiencing housing instability may navigate circumstances that make continuity especially important.

PromiseConnects gives us another way to provide educational support virtually.

During those 2,225.8 hours, students have had opportunities to receive tutoring and academic support, work through questions, practice skills, read, and connect with mentors.

The individual moments may seem small.

Together, they represent thousands of opportunities for someone to show up for a young person.

Digital Equity Is About More Than Devices

Conversations about digital equity often begin with technology.

Who has a device?

Who has internet access?

Who can participate?

Those questions matter.

But we believe there is another question worth asking:

Who is there once a child gets connected?

Technology can help bridge distance. It cannot replace patience, encouragement, mentorship, or the relationship that develops when someone consistently returns.

That is why PromiseConnects brings the two together: access and human connection.

Measuring What We Do

Tracking our hours helps Mentor A Promise understand the reach of our programming and remain accountable for the work we do.

At the same time, hours alone cannot tell the whole story.

A number cannot fully capture a student gaining confidence.

It cannot capture the patience of working through the same problem again.

It cannot capture the importance of a mentor remembering where they left off the week before.

Impact lives in both places:

in what we can measure and in the human experiences behind those measurements.
