Still on the Move: Mike Africa Jr. Reflects on Family, Resilience, and the Legacy of MOVE
What does it mean to grow up carrying the weight of history?
In Still on the Move, a new Mentor A Promise mini-documentary, Mike Africa Jr. shares a deeply personal reflection on family, resilience, and the enduring legacy of MOVE. Through his story, viewers gain insight into the human impact of one of the most significant events in Philadelphia's history: the 1985 MOVE bombing.
For Mike, this history is more than a chapter in a textbook. It is the story of his family. From the imprisonment of his parents to the lasting effects of a tragedy that changed lives and communities forever, his experiences offer a powerful perspective on resilience in the face of adversity.
Filmed during the inaugural MOVE Day 5K on May 16, 2026, Still on the Move captures a day dedicated to remembrance, reflection, and community healing. Participants gathered to honor those who lost their lives, celebrate the strength of survivors, and ensure that the lessons of history continue to be remembered.
The documentary also explores themes that remain relevant today, including family separation, housing instability, generational trauma, and the importance of community support. These are issues that continue to affect families across the country and are closely connected to the work Mentor A Promise does alongside children and families experiencing housing instability.
More than four decades after the events of May 13, 1985, the story of MOVE continues to spark important conversations about justice, memory, and community. Through Mike Africa Jr.'s voice, Still on the Move invites viewers to look beyond historical headlines and connect with the lived experiences of those who continue to carry this history forward.
Some stories help us understand the past.
Others help us understand one another.
Still on the Move is both.
